Are EV prices about to rise?

China will reduce the value-added tax (VAT) export rebate for new-energy vehicles from 13% to 9% starting April 1, 2027. The move could put pressure on Chinese automakers’ profits from overseas sales.

Are EV prices about to rise?

How will this affect car prices?
A 4-percentage-point cut in the rebate rate does not mean car prices will automatically rise by 4 percent.

Manufacturers can absorb the difference in different ways: by cutting profit margins, reducing costs, or raising export prices. Which path they choose depends on each company’s financial position and competition in the international market.

For this reason, the new decision may make electric vehicles more expensive, but it is hard to say now by how much prices will change.

What does it mean for buyers in Uzbekistan?

Chinese electric vehicles are also sold in Uzbekistan’s market, so a change in export costs could affect local prices too. However, this effect depends on several factors.

If manufacturers pass the higher costs on to importers, the purchase price of cars may rise. If companies give up part of their profit instead, prices may well stay the same.

In addition, the final price in Uzbekistan is shaped by logistics costs, the exchange rate, import duties, taxes and dealer markups. So the change in China’s tax policy should not be read as an inevitable price rise in the local market.

Why does this decision matter?

China plays a major role in producing and exporting electric vehicles. For exporters, the reduction of tax benefits may affect companies’ pricing policy, market competition and profit figures.

The practical result of the change will become clear after April 2027, depending on how companies adapt to the new conditions and how much of these costs they pass on to buyers.
