US proposes fees of up to $100,000 for international students seeking practical training

The US Department of Homeland Security has proposed new fees for F-1 international students who want to participate in the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program, which allows them to work in the United States during or after their studies. Reuters reported the proposal.

Under the proposal, an initial OPT authorization could carry a $70,000 fee, while a subsequent period of practical training could cost an additional $30,000, bringing the potential total to $100,000.

The current fee is about $500.

OPT allows international students to work in their field of study for up to 20 hours a week during the academic term and for a limited period after graduation. STEM graduates – those in science, technology, engineering and mathematics – can qualify for an additional period of participation.

The Department of Homeland Security said the proposed fees are intended to combat fraud, strengthen the integrity of the immigration system and protect US workers.

The proposal will be open for public comment for 30 days. If finalized, the rule is expected to take effect 60 days after approval.

Afghanistan on the Geopolitical Chessboard of the Middle East

Against the backdrop of this dangerous crisis, with the international community’s attention focused on the direct participants in the conflict, Gaza, Libya, and Syria, it is appropriate to turn attention to Afghanistan, which, despite its peripheral position relative to the region, is also becoming involved in these processes. Israel and Iran seek to expand their spheres of influence both ideologically and strategically. In this context, South and Central Asia, including Afghanistan, are becoming key zones of geopolitical rivalry, especially for Iran.
