Diplomat Says Ukraine Could Be Divided

Concerns About Ukraine’s Future

Retired US diplomat Chas Freeman said that Ukraine’s territory could be divided among several countries following the end of the conflict. He made the remarks during an interview on a YouTube channel. This was reported by RIA Novosti.

According to Freeman, Ukraine could become a failed state governed by revanchist ultranationalist forces in western Ukraine. The diplomat also did not rule out the possibility that other countries could divide Ukrainian territory among themselves, as has happened in European history in the past.

“We see a Ukraine that appears likely to emerge from the conflict in such a condition that we should all be concerned,” he said.

Freeman Highlights Problems with Corruption and Democratic Freedoms in Ukraine

The diplomat stated that Ukraine does not meet the European Union’s membership criteria in any area.
In his view, corruption levels in the country are high, while democracy and civil liberties are not sufficiently protected. In addition, substantial subsidies from other European countries may be required to support Ukraine.

Freeman also said that Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, with its extensive areas of prime agricultural land, could become a source of controversy. According to him, French farmers and other groups seeking to protect their agricultural interests could oppose such a move.

Hungary Has Stated Its Position on Ukraine

At the beginning of June, Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar said that Budapest would not obstruct the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union after reaching an agreement with Kyiv on restoring the rights of ethnic Hungarians in Transcarpathia.

At the same time, Hungary has opposed the accelerated admission of any country, including Ukraine, to the European Union. Magyar emphasized that Budapest supports an approach to membership based on assessing whether a candidate country meets the established criteria.
