Escalating Israel-Turkey Tensions or the "Neo-Ottomanism" Policy
At the end of 2024, after the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria, the situation changed dramatically. Turkey is trying to replace Iran’s role in Syria and is seeking to establish military bases in the country. According to a joint defense agreement with Syria, Palmyra, Hama, and the T4 airbase were set to be handed over to Turkey. In recent weeks, these military bases have been inspected by Turkish specialists.

However, Turkey’s actions have met with strong resistance from Israel. The Israeli military continues to carry out airstrikes on Syria, particularly in its southern provinces. Notably, two of the bases inspected by Turkey were attacked. This served as a serious warning to the Turks.
The direct proximity of these two major regional power centers is intensifying tensions in the region. Israel perceives Turkey’s deployment in Syria as a threat to its national security.
“Neo-Ottomanism” is a movement that began gaining momentum in Turkey in the 2000s, aimed at increasing influence in the territories of the former Ottoman Empire. This trend especially intensified during the presidency of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
It appears that Erdoğan seeks to strengthen his position by establishing bases in Syria. However, these ambitions are facing active opposition from Israel.
Turkey’s regional ambitions and Israel’s security policy are creating a new confrontation in the region. Syria and Lebanon may become staging grounds for a potential future conflict.
