According to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office, humanitarian aid will continue to be delivered through existing channels until a new mechanism is developed. At the same time, Israel has pledged to take additional measures to prevent aid from falling into the hands of militants.
"The supply of essential foodstuffs is being carried out on the recommendation of the Israeli army to prevent famine," read a statement from Netanyahu’s office, quoted by the dpa news agency.
Journalists recall that since early March, Israel had halted the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza. The Israeli government claims that the Hamas militants controlling the area resell humanitarian aid and use the proceeds to fund weapons procurement.
According to the Walla.co.il portal, the World Food Programme (WFP) and World Central Kitchen are currently involved in delivering humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
Calls for the Israeli government to restore humanitarian assistance have been growing steadily in recent days, especially as the latest Israeli military operation in Gaza has further deteriorated the humanitarian situation for the local population.
