ChatGPT detected stroke symptoms in a seven-year-old before doctors did

In the United Kingdom, a seven-year-old boy suffered a stroke several weeks after complaining of numbness and weakness on the left side of his body. His mother had first turned to ChatGPT, and the AI suggested the symptoms could indicate a stroke — but the boy's condition wasn't identified during his initial hospital examination.

The case began in May 2026. Seven-year-old Junior felt numbness, "tingling," and weakness on the left side of his body while swimming.

The boy's mother, Evangeline Williams, asked ChatGPT for advice to figure out the cause of his symptoms. The AI said the signs could be related to a stroke and recommended taking the child to a doctor.

Following this, the mother took him to the hospital. However, after the examination, doctors sent the boy home.

Over the following weeks, the boy's condition continued to worsen. On June 25, Junior woke up feeling nauseous, began to lose consciousness, stopped responding to those around him, and could barely move.

His mother took him to the hospital again.

"He woke up saying he felt unwell, then vomited several times. He was extremely disoriented. He was laughing, couldn't walk, and couldn't hold up his own body weight. He wasn't responding at all," the boy's mother said.

That day, temperatures in the UK had risen to 38 degrees. Because of this, the mother initially thought his condition might have worsened due to the extreme heat.

However, at the hospital, it became clear the boy's condition was far more serious. According to his mother, he began showing seizure-like symptoms and cried out in pain. After the family's insistence, doctors carried out a full examination.

A CT scan revealed that one of the arteries in his brain was blocked, which had caused an ischemic stroke.

Junior was urgently taken to a specialized clinic and kept in a medically induced coma for three weeks. Doctors gave a pessimistic prognosis for his recovery, saying that in the best case, he might only regain enough function to press a button with his right hand.

But the boy's condition improved better than expected. He was discharged from the hospital on August 11. Junior is now relearning how to walk and crawl.

Even so, the brain damage caused by the stroke has led to a significant developmental setback. His mother is currently focused on his rehabilitation.

A representative of the hospital trust involved has formally apologized to the boy's family over the case. An internal investigation has also been launched to determine why doctors failed to identify the stroke at the earlier stage.
