Paradigma Media Honors Eight Voices in Journalism and Civil Society
Throughout 2025, PARADIGMA MEDIA, having analyzed key developments in the Uzbek media landscape, recognized journalists and representatives of civil society who have made a significant contribution to the development of journalism and the media sector in Uzbekistan.
Drawing on an analysis of key media developments in Uzbekistan in 2025, the editorial team recognized journalists and civil society representatives whose work contributed meaningfully to the development of journalism and the media sector.
The event was held on January 31, 2026, within the framework of the Paradigma Media presentation, with the participation of journalists, civil society representatives, and diplomatic missions in Uzbekistan.

Although there were many candidates worthy of recognition, the editorial team of PARADIGMA MEDIA selected journalists, media mentors, and civic actors who distinguished themselves through concrete actions, an active civic position, and socially significant work.
Their activities demonstrated a strong commitment to objectivity, responsibility, and professional principles in journalism and media, while also contributing to important lessons for Uzbek society, setting examples worthy of emulation, and establishing meaningful precedents.
Through this recognition, the PARADIGMA MEDIA editorial team aims to support free and impartial expression, professional responsibility, and courageous civic engagement. We believe that these values help strengthen public trust and encourage positive change in society.
Below is the list of civic actors recognized by the PARADIGMA MEDIA editorial team within the framework of 2025, along with brief descriptions of their contributions.
Karim Bahriyev
Karim Bahriyev is a veteran journalist widely known in Uzbek journalism for his principled stance and courageous writing. He began his career in the era of print media and quickly gained recognition for his sharp style and critical perspective.
Over nearly four decades, he has worked as a journalist, poet, writer, and translator, consistently addressing issues of freedom of speech and human rights. During his tenure as editor of the newspaper Hurriyat, he made a significant contribution to the development of open and critical journalism.
Despite various forms of pressure, he remained faithful to his principles. His work serves as a model of integrity, conscience, and responsibility for younger journalists. Karim Bahriyev’s legacy is a culture of independent thinking, objectivity, and intellectual autonomy.
Lola Islamova
Lola Islamova is a media management and journalism development specialist who works with journalists and media managers within the framework of the Center for the Development of Modern Journalism. She advocates for journalism not only as a creative profession but also as a sustainable system and viable business.
Her primary focus is on improving media literacy and advancing journalists, bloggers, and press officers to a new professional level. Adapting international best practices to the local context is a key component of her work.
By prioritizing financial sustainability and institutional growth of newsrooms, Lola Islamova contributes to the long-term development of journalism. Her activities promote openness, freedom of expression, and the formation of a new generation of journalists in Uzbekistan.
Navbahor Imamova
Navbahor Imamova is an Uzbek journalist who actively promotes international standards and modern journalistic principles. She views journalism as a way of life and contributes to developing professional skills among young journalists through seminars and training programs.
She works confidently across text, video, interview, and live broadcast formats, producing content in both Uzbek and English. Accuracy and quality are central to her approach to content creation.
Navbahor Imamova continues to make a sustainable contribution to the development of Uzbek journalism as a dedicated professional who is always willing to share her experience.
Shokir Sharipov
Shokir Sharipov is a journalist and columnist known for explaining social and economic issues in Uzbekistan in a clear and accessible manner. He stands out for his ability to present complex topics in concise and conceptual formats. His animated videos—such as Mulk, Milliy G‘oya, What Is a Corrupt Official?, Modern Feudalism, and The Middle Class—have attracted wide public attention.
Rural life and agricultural issues occupy a central place in his work. Viewing rural areas not as a problem but as an opportunity, he promotes ideas aimed at reducing labor migration and supporting local development.
His materials contribute to strengthening social justice and sustainable development, having a tangible impact on the lives of many citizens.
Anora Sodikova
Anora Sodikova is a journalist known for her open stance, courage, and principled approach. For many years, she has covered issues of inequality, corruption, nepotism, and systemic problems in society, considering it her professional duty to bring matters of public interest into open discussion.
One of the most significant moments in her work was her legal challenge against defamatory statements directed at journalists. She treated the issue not as a personal matter, but as one affecting the dignity of the profession as a whole, and took the case to court. Despite difficulties, she pursued it to the end.
This process demonstrated that rights and dignity can be defended through legal means and inspired confidence and determination among many journalists.
Zarifboy Ibodullayev
Zarifboy Ibodullayev is a Doctor of Medical Sciences, professor, and experienced neurologist and neuropsychologist, as well as a public figure known for his strong civic position. He actively engages with ongoing social processes in the country and regularly speaks on issues such as national values, language status, youth education, and the future of the state.
He openly raises concerns related to farmers’ land rights, water resources, labor migration, and the prestige of the Uzbek language, acting in the public interest. Despite various pressures, he remains steadfast in his views, regarding this stance as a responsibility to future generations.
Through his actions, Zarifboy Ibodullayev demonstrates that civic engagement is the responsibility of every conscientious citizen and serves as a role model for young people.
Abdurakhmon Tashanov
Abdurakhmon Tashanov is a well-known public figure who has worked for nearly 25 years in the fields of human rights and journalism in Uzbekistan. He began his career as a journalist and later became actively involved in human rights advocacy, gaining particular recognition through his work with the Ezgulik Society.
He systematically addresses issues such as torture, judicial fairness, the rule of law, and freedom of expression, combining journalistic experience with civic activism.
Viewing his work as a personal mission, Abdurakhmon Tashanov contributes to positive social change and serves as an example for young journalists and human rights defenders.
Irina Matvienko
Irina Matvienko is a specialist working in the fields of gender equality and human rights in Uzbekistan and the founder of the Nemolchi.uz project. Launched in 2016 on social media, the initiative quickly evolved into a nationally significant platform.
She focuses on combating domestic violence against women, promoting gender equality, and protecting human rights. Irina Matvienko is considered one of the first activists in Uzbekistan to bring these issues into systematic public discussion.
Despite facing pressure and threats, she did not abandon her work. She received international education and earned a master’s degree from the London School of Economics.
Today, together with her team and experts, she carries out systematic work in the field of gender equality, contributing to positive changes in society.
